There are certain items you need to have regardless of where you ride out a hurricane. The disaster supply kit is a useful tool when you evacuate or while at home.
Checklist
- Water - 1 gallon per day per person for 3 to 7 days
- Food
- enough for 3 to 7 days
- non-perishable packaged or canned food and juices
- foods for infants or the elderly
- snacks
- non-electric can opener
- cooking tools and fuel
- paper plates and plastic utensils to save water
- Clothing - seasonal, rain gear, sturdy shoes
- First aid kit, medicines, prescription drugs
- Special items - for babies and the elderly
- Toiletries, hygiene items, moisture wipes
- Flashlight and batteries
- Radio - battery operated and NOAA weather radio
- Cash - banks and ATMs might not be open or available for long periods
- Keys
- Toys, books, games
- Important documents
- in a waterproof container
- insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, passports
- Tools - keep a set with you for emergency repairs during the storm
- Vehicle fuel tanks filled
- Pet care
- proper identification, immunization records, medications
- ample supply of food and water
- a carrier or cage
- muzzle and leash
